How can I arrange a consultation at Martin Referrals?
Discuss this with your usual vet first - they will then contact us with clinical details so that an appointment can then be arranged with you.

What will happen on the day of my appointment?
We hold our consultations on weekdays between 9am and 10am. After examining your pet, the vet will explain the diagnostic tests required and the costs involved. Your pet will then need to stay with us for most of that day, and will usually be ready to go home late afternoon. When you return you will see the vet again for an explanation of the findings and available treatment options.

Will my pet need to stay with you overnight?
For pre-booked diagnostic tests, this is unlikely - patients that need to stay here overnight are usually those that are sent to us at short notice as emergencies. We hold our consultations in the morning to enable our patients to return home at the end of the same day.

Will my pet need a general anaesthetic?
This really depends upon the type of diagnostic tests that your pet needs. For instance, the diagostic tests for animals with heart problems are often performed conscious or with some sedation, thus anaesthesia is not necessary. If there is a chest or lung problem then a general anaesthetic will often be necessary to perform the appropriate tests or procedures.

We will be able to give you an answer to this question when we examine your pet and discuss their symptoms with you, following the consultation.

How much does referral cost?
The costs of diagnosis will depend on the number and complexity of diagnostic tests required in each individual case. However, as a rough guide, a cardiac investigation usually costs around £450 - £900, although less tests are necessary for the diagnosis of a puppy / kitten with a murmur. To investigate the cause of respiratory symptoms, which often involves general anaesthesia, the cost varies between £650 and £1100.
